Post 6: Chapter 7

"Tyler Perry's - I Don't Want To Do Wrong"

This clip is directed by the well known Actor Tyler Perry.  It's a melodrama play that shows stereotypical characters involved in serious situations.  In everyday life, we all may have seen this story or heard of something similar to it that shows that everyone deals with good and evil battling in exaggerated circumstances.  Tyler Perry uses comedy to bring light to a serious situation but still knows how to reach the audience with the true meaning of a message he wants to get across.

I love watching all his plays and movies because you can truly relate to them in some kind of way or know someone who can.  They are so powerful and meaningful to the viewing eye.

Post 5: Chapter 6

"I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings"
by Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Born in St. Louis in 1928, Angelou grew up in a segregated society that she worked to change during the civil rights era. This poem was written because Maya Angelou, who refused to speak for much of her childhood, revealed the scars of her past in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first of a series of memoirs. Through a series of personal events, feelings, and thoughts, Maya Angelou was able to captivate her readers.   Maya grew from being the insecure little girl in Arkansas to the strong woman who realizes that she can trust herself and will be able to keep moving forward.

The poem is put together by having different symbols and descriptions to give the reader a sense of what is actually going on.

I love how she incorporates this because you can feel the pain in her heart and know what some of the things and problems that not only her but other people growing up in that era had to deal with.

Post 4: Chapter 5

Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind

Etta James born as Jamesetta Hawkins was born to a 14 year-old mother in South Los Angeles in 1938. She never knew the identity of her father. Her career began in San Francisco when she was 16 years old and she auditioned for bandleader Johnny Otis, considered by many to be the Grandfather of Rhythm and Blues. In 1960, James became the first lady of Chess Records, the blues record label started in Chicago by Leonard Chess. Many of James's biggest hits came from her days at Chess, including "All I Could Do Was Cry" and the album At Last, whose title track became James's signature song.  In 1993, James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1994, James won her first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her tribute album Mystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday. She received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and the following year, Rolling Stone named James to its list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. James won another Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for Let's Roll, released in 2005. It was James' final recording.

In the video you can hear the guitars, drums, and saxophone's in the background.  You can also hear the soulfulness in her voice around the 1:31 mark and the 2:05 mark.

I grew up listening to this kind of music and I fell in love with this song.  Sometimes I can honestly say that I can relate some of my life lessons to this song.  Etta James was a wonderful lady and she used so much soul and emotion and that heart felt blues in her music.  I already love the song but what made me love it even more was the remake of it in the movie "Cadillac Records" when BeyoncĂ© song it.
